At the regional meeting of Press and Media Councils of Southeast Europe and Turkey, held on May 19–20, 2025, in Ohrid, the Media Self-Regulation Council joined its colleagues in adopting the Regional Declaration on the Ethical and Transparent Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Media.
As part of the UNESCO project funded by the EU, “Building Trust in Media in South East Europe: Supporting Journalism as a Public Good”, the meeting brought together representatives of self-regulatory bodies from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Turkey.
The discussions focused on the challenges of ethical journalism in the digital age, media sustainability, and the impact of artificial intelligence on journalism and freedom of expression. The Declaration affirms the shared commitment of all media councils to ensure that AI is used to support - and not replace - professional journalists, with clear guidelines for the responsible use of these technologies.
Key principles of the Declaration include: transparency in labeling AI-generated content, maintaining editorial responsibility, protecting privacy and personal data, combating disinformation, and promoting AI literacy education.
