The Media Council for Self-Regulation strongly condemns the statement of the director of the National Library "Stevan Samardžić", because messages like "be careful what you write" send a very bad and worrying message to the journalists and to the public.
When such words come from someone who runs a public institution, they are rightly perceived as an attempt to pressure and intimidate. Journalists do not do their job to please someone, but to ask questions and point out problems in the interest of citizens. Instead of warnings and messages that can be perceived as a threat, we expect arguments, facts and an open conversation. Criticism and media interest are not an act of hostility, but an integral part of a democratic society.
Any pressure on the media, regardless of how it is packaged, narrows the space for free and responsible journalism. Disputes with the media are resolved through institutions and procedures provided for by the law, not by phone messages that can discourage journalists from doing their job.
The Media Council calls on all public office holders to show more understanding and respect for the role of the media and the public's right to know.
