MSS condemned the attack on Duško Kovačevića

The Media Council for Self-Regulation strongly condemns the insults and threats directed at journalist Duško Kovačević after the publication of the author's text on a topic of public interest. We believe that such vocabulary and tone represent unacceptable pressure on journalists and an attempt of intimidation, which contradicts the basic principles of freedom of expression and professional communication in the public space.

Of particular concern is the fact that the insults and threats were sent by a person who is related to Radoš Zečević, whose name is mentioned in the public as a possible solution for the position of Minister of Transport. Precisely because of such circumstances, it is additionally important to take care of public communication, including the reactions of family members of political actors, because the way in which journalists' questions and texts are answered can have wider implications on the perception of political responsibility and the attitude towards the media.

We remind you that critical writing about public officials and potential holders of public offices is legitimate and necessary in a democratic society. The text that was the reason for the reaction represents the author's comment on a topic of public interest and does not contain speech that would justify this level of insults and threats. In situations where they do not agree with the views expressed, the actors have the opportunity to respond with arguments and through public polemics, and not by insulting and trying to intimidate.

The Media Council for Self-Regulation welcomes the fact that the case was referred to the competent institutions through the Mechanism for the Protection of Journalists and expects a quick and effective reaction, in order to send a clear message that attacks on journalists are unacceptable.

Once again, we emphasize that freedom of the media and the safety of journalists are the key preconditions of a democratic society, and we express our solidarity with the journalist Dusko Kovačević, and call on all public actors to contribute to the culture of dialogue and responsible communication.
